Use the right pencils
There are many different drawing pencils Hard, soft, medium, with round, hexagonal and square section, and so on. But which pencil should you use to improve your drawing technique? Well, each designer must be able to count at least three pencils. This is because, from the initial draft to the hatching, from the definition of the details to the chiaroscuro, he will need pencils with a different stroke and with different characteristics.
Soft pencils, for example, are more difficult to erase, but they leave no grooves in the drawing pad. Hard pencils, on the other hand, are easier to erase, but they must be lightly handled, so as not to leave traces in the paper. Again, hard pencils are clear, and perfect for drawing the smallest details, while softer pencils are dark, and indispensable for a certain type of shading. It is up to you to decide which pencils to use: the important thing is to buy only quality pencils, and to be able to count on at least three different degrees of hardness. Do you think that there are those who, to have a fine, silvery and extremely easy to erase stroke, use only 8H pencils for the sketches!
Not just a type of card
We said you don’t have to have just one type of drawing pencil. Well, in the same way you cannot limit yourself to having only one type of drawing paper. This is because, in order to give your best and to be able to keep your works, you will have to use quality drawing paper albums, with a good weight. Next to the quality sketchbook, with cotton or cotton and cellulose paper, you will also need to have lighter sheets of paper, to do all the necessary tests, sketches and sketches. For all your preliminary drawings, you will therefore need a sketchpad, made of cheaper, lighter weight sheets, even better if made with recycled paper!
Try a different handle
Almost certainly, if you are taking your first steps in the world of drawing with a pencil, hold your drawing instrument in your hand with the “classic” handle, the one you use, in other words, also to write with a pen. However, you need to know that this is not exactly the best grip for drawing. By holding the pencil in this way, in fact, you will inevitably rest your hand on the paper, possibly causing stains, and you will not have your wrist completely free to move. Instead, try to open your hand with the palm facing you, and to close the grip on the pencil with only your index and thumb, then turn your hand and start drawing. At first, we know, it will seem uncomfortable to you. But you will undoubtedly immediately notice that you have greater freedom of movement, and also you will have the advantage of being further away from the paper. Try it, you won’t regret it!
Frame the subject
- A landscape, a face, a still life
When you decide to draw something that is in front of you, we advise you to frame the subject well, to be very clear which part of what you see will end up in your drawing, and what will remain outside it. Over time, this will become automatic. For now, however, we advise you to help yourself with a “wooden frame”, or even paper, and therefore with a rectangle that has the same proportions as your drawing. Place it in front of you, and frame what you want to draw inside it: positioning the various objects on your sheet will now be much easier.
- Close one eye
How many times, in drawing courses or perhaps in films, have you seen someone turn a blind eye to look at the subject to be drawn? This is not a useless expedient, quite the contrary! In fact, turning a blind eye allows us to eliminate depth. Which is good, because the drawing will still be done on a two-dimension the drawing will still be done on a two-dimensional plane?
Start with good light
- Are you drawing a still life, a face, a rose?
In all cases, you have to make sure that the light is the right one to draw without complicating your life. Part of the difficulty of drawing, in fact, lies in reconstructing the shadows correctly. What you need is a direct light that you point on the still life or on the face, in order to have sharp shadows. The ideal, therefore, is to have a single directional beam of light.
Rubber is your friend
The bread eraser to keep the sheet cleans the white eraser to erase errors. Especially the latter is a great friend of yours. When you are at the beginning of the drawing, as soon as you seem to have something wrong, or when it seems that something is not right, do not hesitate: grab your eraser and erase, before it’s too late!
Practice hatching
Often those who want to learn to draw tend to want to just “draw”, always focusing on portraits, landscapes, still lives and so on. But to learn how to draw well, you also need to do some more boring exercises. Every so often, therefore, you should put aside the desire to portray something, to practice on a technical level. It is essential, for example, to learn how to make an excellent hatch, holding the pencil in the right way, drawing hatches in various directions and maintaining absolute control over the traced lines. Make a hundred strokes in one direction, then change it, change the length, change the pressure, change the pencil. In short, experiment and practice!
Choose a strategy and stick with it
When you approach a blank sheet, you decide how you will proceed, and therefore what your steps will be. You could start by identifying the cardinal points of the drawing, such as the exact points where the various lines will intersect the edges of the paper. Then you can sketch the external shapes of the objects to be drawn, and then indicate the darker areas, and then move on to the details… follow a precise plan, so as not to get lost in the middle of the work!
Draw every day
Do you want to keep improving? Dedicate at least some of your time to pencil drawing every day! Only with perseverance and dedication can good results be achieved plane!
