Scientists hope to find ways by which they can slow down the aging process. This search became the sole focus of many scientists after the surprising discovery of 1990s. It was discovered that a mutation in a single gene of an experimental worm could double its lifespan. And scientists began looking for ways to replicate that process in other organisms and humans.

A paper published by MDI Biological Laboratory scientists Jarod Rollins, Ph.D., and Aric Rogers, PhD describes how longevity can be managed post transcriptionally. If the roadmap to the genetic DNA is found, then there can be a way to create the drugs that can enhance longevity.

The experiment is done on C. elegans, a tiny nematode worm, which has similar genetics as human beings. And the life cycle of the worm is also small which makes it easier to get experiments done on it. Studies helped in determining drug therapies that could curb aging or enhance longevity.

“Dietary Restriction Induces Post-transcriptional Regulation of Longevity Genes,” paper that was recently published in the journal Life Science Alliance mentions how longevity can be enhanced.

One of the tips for healthy aging is diet. We aren’t talking about the restricted and starving diet. There would be no malnutrition but restricted diet that boosts longevity. Calorie reduction is important to prevent long term age related degenerative diseases.

In the study they also studied about the adaptive property of the cells. Mostly in case of existential threat the organism adapts and become an improved version. That’s why scientists want to study whether various threats make the organism grow and have a better life span.

Scientists are doing their best to find ways to enhance human life span. And the few tips they offer like restricted diets are effective to enhance it by a margin. But the studies continue for the methods to increase longevity.
