Six Ways To Protect Yourself From A Crime

In the United States, a crime occurs every three seconds. As terrifying as that statistic sounds, citizens can take proactive steps to prevent themselves from becoming victims. This article will discuss tips from a group of Hernando County lawyers on ways every person can do to protect themselves.

1. Be aware of your surroundings.

You can easily let down your guard when you feel comfortable in your everyday activities. You take the same route to work daily and see the same people in your neighborhood and at the grocery store. You’d notice if something were out of place, right?

It is essential to always be aware of your surroundings because you never know who else is paying attention to you. If something feels off, it probably is. Don’t hesitate to trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation.

2. Avoid walking alone at night.

If you must walk alone, be aware of potential hiding spots where someone could jump out and attack you. Stay in well-lit areas, and avoid shortcuts through alleys or dimly lit parking lots. If you can, bring a friend or family member with you.

If you walk alone at night regularly, consider taking a self-defense class or carrying a personal alarm, pepper spray, or Taser.

3. Keep your doors and windows locked.

According to the FBI, you may be surprised to learn that over 34% of burglaries happen because the doors or windows were left unlocked.

You can protect your home by making sure all doors and windows are locked, even when you’re home. If you have a security system, make sure it is turned on. If you don’t have a security system, consider investing in one.

4. Install motion sensor lights.

Burglars don’t want to be seen, so bright lights are often enough to deter them. You can install motion sensor lights around your home’s perimeter and ensure all outside lights are working.

Test your motion sensors regularly to make sure they are working correctly. Turning the sensors off during the day is also recommended, so they don’t go off every time a car or animal passes by.

5. Don’t advertise.

If a burglar can see valuable items through your windows, they may be tempted to break in. Keep expensive jewelry, electronics, and other valuables out of sight, and consider investing in a safe to keep them in.

If you have new electronics or other valuable items, don’t leave the boxes out by the trashcan. According to the Hernando County lawyers, this is like an invitation for burglars to come and take your stuff.

When you go on vacation, don’t post about it on social media until after you’re back. Any indication that you are not home is an opportunity for a break-in. You can also hold your mail or have a trusted friend or neighbor pick it up.

6. Have an emergency plan.

Preventative measures are important, but you must also be prepared for the worst. Talk to your family about what to do if there is a fire, break-in, or another emergency. Make sure everyone knows how to call 911 and the critical information they’ll need to give the operator.

Have an escape route planned in case of a fire, and practice it regularly. Teach your children what to do if they’re home alone and someone tries to break in.

Final thoughts

No one wants to think about being the victim of a crime, but it’s essential to be prepared. By following these simple tips from the Hernando County lawyers, you can help keep yourself and your family safe and make it more difficult for criminals to target you. You are less likely to become a victim of a crime if you are aware of your surroundings, take precautions when walking alone, and keep your home secure. Developing an emergency plan will also help you prepare for the worst.
